Support Melissa Calhoun: Stand for Inclusive Education

Melissa Calhoun, a dedicated teacher at Satellite High School in Brevard County, Florida, was recently informed that her contract would not be renewed for the 2025-2026 school year. This decision came after she addressed a student by their preferred name without obtaining prior parental consent, which was deemed a violation of Florida's "Parental Authorization for Deviation from Student's Legal Name Form" law. This law, implemented at the start of the 2023-2024 school year, requires educators to have a signed parental form before using a name different from a student’s legal name. ​

The situation arose when a parent reported that Ms. Calhoun had used the student's preferred name without the necessary authorization. Following an internal investigation, during which Ms. Calhoun acknowledged her actions, the district decided not to renew her contract. Additionally, the state is reviewing her teaching credentials.

Ms. Calhoun has been a part of the Satellite High School community since 2013 and is renowned for her exceptional ability to connect with students. Her colleagues and former students have expressed strong support for her, emphasizing the positive impact she has had on their lives. A Change.org petition advocating for her reinstatement has garnered over 14,580 signatures, reflecting the community's belief in her dedication and effectiveness as an educator. ​
