Support Meyzeek Middle's Beautification

The Meyzeek Middle School PTSA is spearheading a major redesign of the school's main entrance off of Jackson Street. The current hardscape plaza is in disrepair, has drainage problems, and is an eyesore. The Meyzeek campus consists of two constructions - the original Meyzeek building in an art-deco style and a brutalist addition that is incongruent with the art-deco style of the original building. The brutalist addition creates an unwelcoming entrance for the building, and does not match the spirit of the high-performing school.

Situated in the Smoketown neighborhood of Louisville, Meyzeek Middle School is in a neighborhood undergoing beautification and renovation to provide affordable, safe housing. Meyzeek Middle wants to contribute to the beautification of the neighborhood, a neighborhood from which many Meyzeek students hail.

The attached plan proposes to soften the entrance and enhance the overall exterior on the eastern and northern sides of the building through the creation of a welcome plaza in front of what was the original entrance to the school, and an overall greening of the space by replacing the existing deteriorating concrete hardscape with a sustainable, native landscape plan.

An integral part of the proposal is for all plantings to be native species, with sustainability and minimal maintenance in mind. The majority of the landscape plan entails little to no manicuring.

To address safety concerns, the architect recommends the installation of 2 motion sensor triggered 1000 Lumen LED solar powered Security lights mounted on the roof structure columns, as well as adding an additional camera to the school's existing closed circuit camera system.
The location of the welcome plaza structure is adjacent to the main entrance to the building (and actually in the location of the original entrance to the school when it was first built). It is anticipated that this area would be ideal for receiving media, as well as a natural covered holding area for students queuing for entrance.
