Support Michael with his Disability

Howdy all:

My name is Kayla and I’m organizing this fundraiser on behalf of my good friend, Michael.

Michael has ME/CFS as a result of a COVID infection he had in 2020. Like many with ME/CFS, Long Covid, and post-viral illness, Michael has experienced devastating losses. As a Disabled and chronically-ill person myself, I know intimately how illness can change our relationships, access to community, equitable employment, and financial supports.

Michael recently lost his job because of his illness and must now apply for SSDI to meet his survival needs. This application process isn’t easy and is incredibly involved. Often, it can take years and involve appeals. In fact, there is currently a backlog of appeals and according to the Government Accountability Office, 110,000 Americans have died in the last decade waiting for a hearing and a judge’s decision on their SSDI application. As of October 2023, the average wait time for an applicant to be notified of a decision—approval or denial—is 223 days. Even if approved, folks are subject to strict income caps that keep them in poverty. Many Disabled folks are unable to meet their survival needs and rely on mutual aid and community support because of this process.

Although Michael and I have only known each other for a few months now, I feel like I’ve known him my whole life. He is an incredibly genuine person that I cherish dearly. It takes extraordinary amounts of creativity and strength to grapple with the losses that illness can bring, to show up as you are and rebuild a life. This is especially courageous when the world shouts at us that we are burdensome and undeserving as Disabled people. In my biased opinion, us Disabled folks are some of the most beautiful and inventive people. We are more than deserving of a life brimming with support, comfort, and love.
