Miguel Fiol is a Puerto Rican playwright whose work on behalf of the Puerto Rican people on the island and in Minnesota has inspired me to support his most recent play, The Chrysalis. It's a powerful, insightful, stirring family drama recognized as a promising new work by the Miranda Family Foundation National Playwriting Competition in New York City and by Teatro del Pueblo in St. Paul.

Donors interested in supporting Afro-Puerto Rican actors and musicians in the Twin Cities area, individuals and organizations wishing to support the causes of LGBTQ+ rights, and theater lovers wishing to support the work of a vital but traditionally underrepresented group of actors and artists are invited to help us bring Miguel's story to life.

The Chrysalis is a drama set in 1990s Puerto Rico--a time when American pharmaceutical companies reaped tax-free profits making life-saving AIDS medications most Puerto Rican citizens couldn't afford. A father has to weigh the advantages of working for the Americans against the costs to his wife and two sons after a family friend falls ill, and the only way forward is for every family member to face difficult questions at the very heart of their identities.

I've served as dramaturg over the last few years, helping Miguel to develop the play in English based on his novel, whose translation from Spanish to English I edited. We've had staged readings of the play in New York City and St. Paul, and are now ready to bring the work to the stage. We can only do it with your generous support. We're scheduling rehearsals and performances in the spring of 2025.

Neither Miguel nor I are receiving salaries for this project. Money is deposited to the account of the Fiol Family Foundation to pay costs of the production.

Any funds remaining after paying production costs will support the foundation's mission to serve healthcare needs of Puerto Ricans on the island and in the diaspora. Miguel makes several trips to Puerto Rico per year to deliver medical care and supplies in his native Ponce.
