Monica's Tuition Fund: The Final Stretch
Donation protected
My name is Monica Martinez and I am a first-generation, low-income student at UCLA from South Central Los Angeles. I am double-majoring in Political Science and Geography/Environmental Studies and minoring in Spanish. I am set to complete the final courses required to obtain my degrees over the summer through a study abroad program located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I have secured a volunteer internship with the Instituto de Derechos Humanos (Institute of Humans Rights) and will be working on an independent project focused on documenting the current women's rights movement.
In full disclosure, I have only been awarded one grant of $1,950 and the total cost of attendance for this program is $6,707. Throughout these past four years, I have worked a total of six jobs (on and off campus) and relied on scholarships to fund my education, however this has not been enough. I have exhausted my resources and the financial aid I have received only covers 29% of the tuition.
At a critical time in our history, and as a daughter of Salvadoran refugees, I am more than ever confident in my decision to pursue a career in law (with a focus in international human rights and immigration). My goal is to advocate for greater mental health access + environmental justice in underprivileged communities, and to represent those most vulnerable to legal systems, which prioritize criminalization over justice. I want to leave this world having done everything in my power to make it better; a world in which those most at-risk are protected, regardless of their identity or place of birth.
Because I am unable to cover the cost on my own, I am reaching out to my community and anyone able to support me. The contributions received will not only allow me pay for these final courses but will ultimately grant me the opportunity to reach my long-term goals.
Thank you.
