Support Mr. Lazo

As many of you may know, our beloved Mr. Leo Lazo is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. This news shocked us at the close of 2020, and is still very present in our community. After undergoing chemotherapy locally without the hoped for results, Mr. Lazo, a 15-year veteran teacher in our community, is transitioning his care to the good folks at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
Beautifully, we have since learned that a former St. Therese parent, Dr. Chiba Ene, is a fellow at the center, with a focus on neurosurgery. Leo and his beloved, Esperanza, have been able to get much more personalized attention and information as a result of this St. Therese community connection. While the Lazos are optimistic that this treatment plan will bring the healing and solutions needed, the need for prayer for Leo, Esperanza, and the care team at MD Anderson are as great as ever.
There is also financial need to support the Lazo Family, which is why I have created this fundraiser. Medical bills aside, receiving treatment out of state comes with travel and lodging expenses, that are NOT covered by insurance. To date, Leo has had to travel to Houston twice, with two more trips planned in the coming months for treatment and follow-up care. While Leo and Esperanza are very humble and have not asked for anything, when I heard that Esperanza would not be accompanying Leo on the second trip to prioritize the third, I knew we had to do something - neither of them should have to weather this storm apart from the other!
I was able to get an estimate out of them for the cost of airfare and lodging for Leo's next round of treatment, which they put at $3000. I added 10% to this cause knowing that there is always something more - especially when it comes to travel!
If you are able, please chip in a few dollars and let's see if we can take part of the financial burden away. In this week of Pentecost, I am reminded of the mindset and spiritual practice of the early Christian community as described in Acts 4:32-35,
The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common.
With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need.
Our brother and sister are in need - I humbly ask you to contribute to this cause as you are able. My hope is to get the funds to the Lazo Family by June 1, when they depart for 2 weeks of intensive treatment. Even if you cannot contribute financially, please join me in prayer, and if you'd like to offer Leo and Esperanza words of encouragement, please e-mail them directly to Leo or drop cards/letters off at St. Therese Catholic Academy prior to Noon on Friday, May 28.
