Brutal Attack Leaves Taxi Driver Fighting For His Life
The United Steelworkers are committed to protecting the health and safety of workers. We believe that no worker should go to work to provide for their family only to pay with their health and safety or, tragically, their life.
However, that is what happened to Muhammad Umar, a Taxi Driver for Regina Cabs and a United Steelworkers member, on the morning of April 13th.
On Friday morning 34 year old Muhammad Umar, married with 4 young children all under the age of 10 got in his taxi cab for his last shift before the weekend in what seemed like a normal day. He had no way of knowing that this day would forever change his life.
While driving his customers to what he thought was their destination, Muhammad was violently attacked, slashed in the throat and stabbed multiple times in his side and stomach. He escaped from his car and was left for dead on the sidewalk. The offenders then stole the taxi van and fled the scene as Muhammad desperately searched for help.
This is every family’s worst nightmare. We are currently fighting for WCB coverage for Muhammad.
The USW has been lobbying to prevent violence for taxi drivers and to ensure that they have access to WCB insurance. We will continue this fight for justice.
Muhammad Umar is still in very serious condition. He is hooked up to life saving equipment with his family by his side. It is expected that it will be a very long time before he fully recovers from the mental and physical trauma that he has endured.
Right now we have one urgent request:
We are calling on everyone to help Muhammad and his family financially so that they can continue to have some measure of stability until such time that Muhammad is back in good health.
We kindly thank those that can find it in their heart to help our friend and brother by donating to Muhammad and his family.
