Hello, my name is Nahshon Dion Anderson. I’m a disabled award-winning writer and emerging filmmaker originally from Altadena, CA, with roots dating back to the 1950s. I now reside in the Bronx, NY. My heart and soul remain deeply tied to my hometown, and the recent devastation caused by the Eaton Canyon wildfire has left me determined to act.
My childhood homes at 544 W. Altadena Dr. and 321 W. Palm St. were destroyed, along with the homes of my 89-year-old cousin, James Preston, at the corner of 2716 Marengo and 365 Mariposa. Also destroyed were the homes of several childhood friends, other community members, and treasured writers like Michele Zack.
The Mission:
The Eaton Canyon wildfire didn’t just burn landscapes; it scorched the memories, homes, and hopes of the community I hold dear. I’m organizing a trip back to Altadena with a mission to:
• Provide emotional support to those affected by the wildfire.
• Volunteer in cleanup efforts to help restore the community.
• Document the aftermath through writing, photography, and interviews to preserve the stories of resilience and recovery.
• Care for animals.
Why This Matters:
As a trauma survivor, writer, and cultural practitioner who lost my sister Shennea to a fire in 2005, I believe in the power of storytelling to heal and inspire change. This trip will allow me to amplify the voices of my community and create a lasting record of their experiences and recovery. My presence there is not only about giving back but also about being a bridge between the devastation and the world’s understanding of it.
How You Can Help:
To make this trip possible, I need your support. Your contribution will cover:
• Round-trip travel from New York to Los Angeles.
• Lodging for one month.
• Meals and daily necessities.
• Ground transportation to navigate affected areas.
• Miscellaneous expenses related to volunteer and documentation efforts.
The Impact:
Your generosity will not only help me provide hands-on assistance and emotional support to those in need but will also enable me to document this critical moment in my community’s history. The stories and visuals I collect will serve as a testament to resilience and recovery, raising awareness and fostering solidarity far beyond Altadena.
How to Support:
Every contribution, no matter the size, brings me closer to achieving this mission. Sharing this fundraiser with your network can make a huge difference, even if you cannot donate.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for any support you can provide. Together, we can help rebuild, heal, and preserve the legacy of Eaton Canyon and its people.
