Greetings to you! I have been accepted to the British American Drama Academy's (BADA) 2025 Black British Theatre and Performance Program. I will be traveling to London, UK to embark on a journey geared towards expanding my knowledge in theatremaking within the African Diaspora. Below is a snippet of my application essay to give you a glimpse of why this opportunity is so important to me. I truly appreciate your kindness to support me in this endeavor.
"I’ve always felt drawn to the broader African Diasporic experience and I would love the opportunity to expand my knowledge through programs like this one. My interests also lie within the intersection of the representation of the global Black experience and our collective and/or individual mental and emotional wellbeing. I plan to pursue a career in the healing arts space alongside my personal artistic endeavors. I’m very interested in expanding my knowledge of the ways in which artistic expression has influenced the perception of Blackness and has been a vehicle of empowerment for the African diaspora.
My experience of Blackness has been through an American lens and because of that, I have been yearning to journey around the world to learn more about Blackness through other perspectives, specifically in exploring varying approaches to storytelling. Knowing that we are all connected on this earth and have influence on each other, I see the Black British Theatre and Performance program as an opportunity to expose myself to the stories that connect the threads of my identity. I look forward to learning from prominent leaders who have shared their voice through artistic expression as a means of protest, enlightenment, and celebration. With the chance to be immersed in a city where theatre is held in such high regard, I am curious to discover how the Black voice has contributed to this reputation historically. What major shifts of influence have occurred throughout the journey? How do the voices of this community hold space in the current culture? If awarded the opportunity to participate in this program, I look forward to amplifying my artistic voice after having witnessed the stories of my kindred community."
