My name is William, but this isn't about me as much as it is about my mom, Judy. She's 81 years old and lives by herself about three hours from where I'm writing this. I'm her only child. That's us in the photo. Over Halloween weekend she fell in her place and was down for at least one day, maybe two. She was in the hospital afterwards for several days. They released her home with home health for rehab, but she got worse, and I had to take her back to the ER; now she's in a short term rehabilitation facility for the next several weeks. She's doing better physically, but this took quite a toll on her, and I'm unsure if she's going to be able to live by herself again. There are some cognitive issues now that worry me greatly.
I'm creating this gofundme for two basic reasons: firstly, I think she's going to need to be relocated to the KC area where I live. We've gotten to the point now that a three hour drive to see her is too long; I want to be able to check in with her every few days, so we are not in a situation like before -- and that's if she doesn't end up going to an assisted living facility. Moving costs money, and I just don't have any to spare right now, as I am transitioning to a new job myself next week. Neither does she. This is going to be quite the logistical challenge for both of us. I'm all she has, so I am going to have to be the one managing it. Additionally, after she fell and was in the hospital, I ended up having to stay at a hotel for five nights until she went into rehab, which is something that I just didn't have budgeted. Some friends assisted me with this, and I am grateful -- but I am going back again this weekend, and will do the same every weekend I can until she's either mended, moved, or both. This is a lot of money for me, and things were already lean. It's one of those things you have to do for a parent, though. I have to go see her. I'm her only child.
So that's basically the long and short of it. I'm trying to raise funds for her moving closer to me, and also cover some of my own expenses in the interim while I repeatedly travel to see her.
My apologies for not writing more eloquently here, but I am honestly kind of frazzled. The past couple of weeks have been stressful, and I've felt powerless watching events transpire. Anything that can be done to help her (and me) would be greatly appreciated, and relieve some of that stress.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I will keep it updated as she progresses.
UPDATE 11/18: While she's better physically now, she has shown more cognitive deterioration. It's been heartbreaking to witness. We are going to have to move her now from short term rehabilitation into assisted living with a memory unit for the time being, as her insurance will no longer cover her short term rehab after Wednesday, given that she can walk again. This creates another set of issues, given the expense of ASL and how it isn't covered by insurance. We just can't afford the out of pocket costs.
