Support Workers In Myanmar Under Attack

Tax deductible
The Civil Disobedience Movement in Myanmar has mobilized multi-ethnic people in Myanmar and allies around the world. On March 7th, 18 Myanmar labor organizations issued a joint call for a nationwide general strike to confront a brutal military coup that overthrew a democratically elected government on February 1st, threatening the future prosperity and freedom of Myanmar's country and people.

Trade unions and workers are on the front lines at great risk to their lives leading a national struggle for a future free from military suppression and violence. Public sector civil servants across a multitude of professions are striking; railway workers, air control and cabin crew, oil field workers, teachers, healthcare workers, miners, bank staff, ministries offices, and governmental administrators are refusing to work with inspiration from the CDM.

Many of these workers have suffered for decades under the military junta, especially people who hold ethnic nationalities.

Workers in protest have fallen victims to military and police brutality, and many young people have given their lives in this fight for democracy and freedom. The military coup has banned all trade unions, issued arrest warrants for trade union leaders and activists, and raided homes. However, the fight for rights in Myanmar presses on.

Please contribute whatever you can to the workers in this difficult fight — anything counts! All funds will go directly to the labor organizations on the ground in Myanmar, who will distribute the funds strategically to members and non-union workers in order to prolong and expand the general strike and Civil Disobedience Movement. Your contribution will cover costs such as:
  - transportation to protests
  - lost wages
  - strike materials
  - face masks/coverings and other Covid-prevention measures
  - safety and shelter
  - meals and water

APALA works directly with Myanmar labor organizations and their umbrella organizations and will be able to transfer funds to them swiftly during this critical time. Donations will go towards the general strike funds of various unions in Myanmar and to the mutual aid efforts by the Chin Leaders of Tomorrow who are working with grassroots organizers to lead the fight for freedom of association and democracy against the military regime.
