Support Mykia's Medical Bills
Hey Everyone!
My name is Abigail, and I have been a mentor to Mykia over the last three years through an organization called Young Life. With approval and support from her family, I am putting together a GoFundMe to support Mykia's ongoing medical bills.
On August 25th around midnight, Mykia was leaving work in Uptown and got caught in the crossfire of a shootout where a bullet went through her neck; damaging her artery, trachea, and vocal chords. She was rushed to HCMC where she underwent 9 hours of surgery to evaluate the damage, begin the repair process, and place a tracheostomy tube for support in breathing.
We are so thankful that at 11:30am this morning, almost 12 full hours after the shooting, Mykia woke up and opened her eyes for her mom and brother. As the day continued, she was able to make it off the ventilator, which doctors assumed might not happen for a couple of more days. At this point, doctors are unsure of the long term issues that Mykia will face, including potentially having a tracheal tube long term, and the possibility of never being able to talk again. With that being said, Mykia has a long road ahead in her recovery journey. Doctors confirmed that she will need quite a few more surgeries for repairs, and will continue to need ongoing support and therapy for the foreseeable future. We want to make sure that her family is able to focus on taking care and supporting Mykia, as well as supporting Mykia's younger sister, rather than worrying about the medical bills to come. Please consider donating what you can to support this amazing family and young woman.
A little about Mykia:
Mykia graduated from North High School in Minneapolis in the Spring of 2021 where she was an athlete, link leader, and amazing student. She had plans to attend college in the fall as a first generation college student, and was excited about the opportunity to become a nurse. She is one of the most kind and compassionate young women that I know; she is friends with all and is always the first to invite someone to the table. Last night Mykia had over 50 people there praying over her and being in community while awaiting updates, and even more numbers today. This is a true testament to who she is, and represents the love we have for her. She is strong, a true fighter. We know she will make it through this, we are continuing to pray and manifest miracles.
I am so thankful that you have considered donating to such a wonderful family; supporting them on this ongoing journey to recovery. Please continue to send all the positive thoughts and prayers to her and her family, they are felt and appreciated.
