Nathan Tully is passionate about life and passionate about what he does. He coaches highschool wrestling and runs Snakepit Wrestling Academy Guam- a non profit dedicated to sharing the sport of wrestling with the youth of Guam. Before coming to Guam, he was a major part of Heartlift in England, a charity that helps less fortunate people to live and love their lives. He is a husband and a father of two young and amazing children, Marleya and Tyson.
In late September, Nathan was experiencing pain on the left side of his tongue. After a month or two he visited the oral surgeon on Guam and had a biopsy done. The first biopsy came back negative. After another month and a half of pain with no results, Nathan was advised by friends at his work that he should see another specialist and the Ear, nose and throat doctor on Guam. What was a 1cm lesion had now grown to a 2cm lesion. The painful ulceration was growing and not healing. As soon as he saw Dr. Castro at the ENT office, his well trained eye led him to believe that what Nathan had was malignant cancer. After the standard procedures and a second biopsy it was confirmed that Nathan had squamous cell carcinoma in situ of the tongue.
Nathan was quickly referred to UCLA to be taken care of by some of the best in the head and neck department. After Many appointments we were told that Nathan would undergo a Hemiglossectomy and a free flap reconstructive surgery. This means that 50% of his tongue including any possible cancerous tissue will be removed. The surgeons will take tissue from either his forearm or his thigh along with blood vessels And nerves to reconstruct the missing half of his tongue. After a nine hour surgery he will need speech therapy as well as radiation to make sure he is cancer free.
