SUPPORT NEWCASTLE-GATESHEAD FOODBANKS
Donation protected
In times of crisis, we must work together to support vulnerable people in our community. We are raising money to aid foodbanks and support mutual aid groups across Newcastle and Gateshead. Every donation will make huge a difference! Thank you in advance for your kindness, generosity and support.
Who Are We?
We are the Artist Food Bank Network (AFBN), a volunteer-run network of artists, art workers, musicians and artist hubs working in solidarity with foodbanks and mutual aid groups across Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead, North-East England. The artist hubs involved in the network include 36 Lime Street, B&D Studios, Breeze Creatives, Cobalt Studios, The NewBridge Project and WORKPLACE FOUNDATION.
With many artists, art workers and musicians living in precarity on zero-hour contracts or in self-employment without statutory rights, we have seen a drastic increase in people accessing food banks during the pandemic. We believe it is vital to work together to support our local community through this crisis.
Our Background
AFBN was established in October 2019. Before the COVID19 coronavirus crisis, each artist hub operated as a drop-off point to donate essential food and non-food items, that we collected and delivered to local food banks. However, due to the pandemic lockdown and Government advice on social distancing in March 2020, we could not continue collecting donations.
In response to this, we quickly adapted by utilising online fundraising and our network. Thanks to all the generous folk who donated to and shared our GoFundMe page, we raised a whopping £14,444! This was donated to Newcastle West End Foodbank, Gateshead Foodbank, Walker & District Foodbank and East End Women. After this, ABFN volunteers donated their time to local food banks on-site packing and delivering food parcels, tidying and cleaning, and dismantling furniture, in addition to, working at a social distance providing support through social media marketing.
We aim to continue supporting vulnerable people in Newcastle and Gateshead throughout 2021.
