Hi everyone,
My name is Ngozi Obi, I am a rising junior at Spelman College, majoring in health science on the pre-med track. I am a first-generation college student, who has shown incredible dedication to both my studies and community. During my time at Spelman, I have actively engaged in numerous organizations that prioritize service and mentorship. My experience as a member of the MASTERS program, in which I dedicate my time to tutoring local youth in math subjects to bridge educational disparities in underserved communities. Furthermore, my involvement as a volunteer of Utopia Atlanta, a community service organization that provides essential resources and support to those around the Atlanta University Center, underscores my commitment to service and social impact. Over the last three years, I have also volunteered as a counselor and cabin leader at Camp Hope by Kidz2leaders Inc. Camp Hope is a faith-based, week-long overnight summer camp that offers mentorship and empowerment to children who have been impacted by parental incarceration. Through this opportunity, I have had the privilege to serve as a mentor and role model for young girls hailing from underserved communities and whose backgrounds bear semblance to my own. Additionally, I was selected to engage in several medical symposiums including Morehouse School of Medicine’s First Look Conference, the 6th Annual Maternal Black Health Conference, and the National Association of Medical Minority Educators Conference.
As an aspiring advocate for equitable healthcare delivery and a firm believer in the intrinsic value of diversity, I am excited to announce my acceptance into the YES in THE HEIGHTS program at Columbia University, where I will be conducting cancer research alongside esteemed scientists and physicians. This opportunity will allow me to further my knowledge and skills in the healthcare field.
However, as a student relying on loans to finance my education, I am in need of any financial assistance to cover travel fare, technological expenses (laptop and/or IPad), and spending money while in New York City. Housing has been provided for us, but I will need help covering things like bedding, toiletries, and even food. I have been unable to work during my time at Spelman, due to the heavy course load. Any contribution to my cause would be greatly appreciated.
Your support will not only help me to pursue my dreams of a career in healthcare, but also enable me to address healthcare disparities and promote overall well-being in underserved communities through an MD-MPH dual degree. Thank you for your consideration of support on this journey. Your generosity will make a meaningful impact on my life and the lives of those I will serve in the future.
I have attached screenshots of my acceptance into the program, as well as the official link of YES in THE HEIGHTS.
