Support Noemi Press

Like hundreds of other small presses, we are reeling from the sudden closure of Small Press Distribution (SPD) on March 28, 2024. We rely on our distributor to manage about half of our yearly sales, and to be suddenly without one leaves us in a perilous place.

We love our community, and you have supported us in so many ways, including through a successful leadership transition to co-publishers Suzi F. Garcia and Anthony Cody. In early 2024, we have been so excited about the work we are doing, including the recent release of three new titles: Choose This Now by Nicole Haroutunian, Love the World or Get Killed Trying by Alvina Chamberland, and Girl Work by Zefyr Lisowski. We have much more coming down the line in the future. We are hoping you can help us again.

We are owed two quarters worth of royalties from SPD, which we estimate to be about $12,000. This is money we use for our operations, and it’s a large portion of our yearly budget.

We are essentially fielding a double loss, as this portion of our operating budget is now gone and we also urgently need to reestablish a distribution partnership. We estimate the associated costs with moving our deep catalog to be about $13,000.

In raising this money, we want to be very clear about what we intend to use it for and prioritize.

1) Author commitments. We haven’t seen any funds from the books sold in those two quarters, and we want to maintain continuity for our authors in regards to royalties, post-publication award fees, and more.

2) Distribution setup. We have been seeking a new distributor for a few years now, which puts us in a good place to act quickly. However, there are fees associated with title setup, transfer, and labor to do so.

3) Shipping. We do not currently have access to the majority of our stock, which is housed at Ingram, a company we have no formal relationship with and who has not yet responded to our messages. When we do gain that access, we will need to ship books from Ingram to our new distributor.

While we have been informed there will be a way to apply through the state of California, in which SPD is being dissolved, for funds we are owed, it is not clear SPD has those funds or that we will eventually see that money. A potential equitable distribution of any SPD assets may or may not include us.

We are not going anywhere. We are outraged at the lack of care and accountability from SPD in this situation, but we will continue publishing work that challenges the status quo because it is necessary and because it is our heart’s work.
