Introduction:
Hello wonderful friends! My name is Erin Calkin-Maynes and I’m reaching out to you with a heavy heart and an urgent plea for help. My husband and love of my life Daryl Maynes, is a true Navy Sailor who has dedicated the last 24 years to serving our great country with unwavering dedication and sacrifice. However, Daryl is now facing the battle of his life as he fights against advanced Stage 4 colon cancer. He has already gone through several hospitalizations, 9 rounds of chemotherapy, and is expected to need 6 to 8 more treatments before being reevaluated for cytoreductive surgery. Tricare covers the cost of all of that, it’s the other things that can have a major impact on his cancer that they don’t. I was working as a full time travel Physical Therapist Assistant before his diagnosis, since then I have been unable to work and now acts as his full-time medical support. The financial burden being placed on us has been tremendous. We are facing hurdles that could not have been anticipated and desperately need your support to give Daryl a chance at survival. We have already sold his car and are a single car family to help offset some cost.
The Treatment Dilemma:
While we are filled with hope, the reality is that the additional treatments he urgently needs are expensive and not covered by their insurance company. These additional treatments, continuous glucose monitors (every 10-14 days), Ketone test kits, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, crucial IV therapies and specialized nutritional support after chemotherapy, are essential for giving Daryl the best opportunity to overcome this disease. We also have a specialized cancer dietitian that’s out of state that’s helping us navigate the course much better and more comprehensively than any military provided assistance. That cost also comes out of pocket. Currently the cancer has made it so that he cannot eat and fully digest any foods. This has resulted in his primary source of nutrition coming from IV Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) which has high glucose concentration and is extremely problematic for fighting and winning against the Stage 4 colon cancer. As his wife, it pains me beyond words to see Daryl’s health, weight, and mental capacity deteriorate while he struggles to access the treatments that could make all the difference in his fight.
Why We Need Your Help:
I am humbly reaching out to you, Daryl’s extended family of friends, colleagues, and compassionate souls, to ask for your support during his challenging time. Your generous contributions will directly contribute to funding Daryl’s medical expenses and additional treatments that Tricare will not cover. Every donation, no matter how small, will bring Daryl one step closer to beating this cancer and returning to the life he so dearly loves.
How You Can Make a Difference:
Every dollar counts and your contribution will go directly towards covering the cost of essential treatments, medications, and nutritional support. Tricare, which is the primary military health insurance carrier, will not cover very costly IV drips, such as concentrated Vitamin C and co-united rehydration, needed for his strength during and in-between chemotherapy treatments.
Please share Daryl’s story with your friends, family, and social networks. The more people who know about his situation, the greater the chances are of receiving the support he desperately needs. I believe in the power of positive energy and prayers. Please keep Daryl in your thoughts and send him your healing prayers.
Closing Thoughts:
As I write these words, my heart is overflowing with gratitude knowing that your kindness and generosity can make an immeasurable difference in our lives. Your support not only provides financial us, but also lifts our spirits reminding them that they are not alone in this fight.
Thank you from the depths of my heart for taking the time to read our story. Please consider supporting this cause. Your compassion gives Daryl and Erin hope and strength.
With much love and heartfelt thanks,
Erin Calkin-Maynes
