Support Our Dad's Fight Against Multiple Sclerosis

Hello, our names are Teigan, Kyle, and Jack. Our dad, Kevin, has been fighting with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (PPMS) since before he was diagnosed in 2020. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that damages the central nervous system. Dad’s diagnosis of PPMS means his MS consistently worsens day after day. Our dad is only 49 years old, and is struggling to perform everyday tasks, including not being able to work anymore as a millwright. He can no longer do the things that brought him joy, let alone manage the basic necessities of life. There is a chance for a procedure that could halt the progression of this disabling autoimmune disease, but our family will need support from the community so we can help our dad.

In an effort to stop the progression of his MS, dad is applying for stem cell replacement surgery, known as Autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (aHSCT). This procedure requires him to go through extensive chemotherapy to destroy his immune system, and then regrow it using his own stem cells. The chances of this procedure working are higher, the sooner he can get it done.

Dad is no stranger to hard work and has regularly been working with a neurologist who specialises in MS, a physiotherapist, an osteopath, a homeopath, a chiropractor, a naturopath, a Chinese-medicine doctor, an acupuncturist, and a personal trainer to help fight against the progression of his disease. All this effort has helped - but the PPMS continues to progress. At 49, he is reliant on a cane for stability, fatigues easily, and cannot walk more than 20 feet without assistance or a long rest. The aHSCT transplantation is performed out of country, meaning insurance does not provide any coverage; the procedure costs upwards of $80,000.

With dad no longer working and medical bills already piling up, we are struggling to find the funds to help with this life-changing procedure. This may be the only chance dad will have to regain a sense of his own life, being able to take care of himself, and returning to the things that bring him hope and joy. He is too young to be going through any of this.
