Calling all S.T.E.A.M (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) enthusiasts!
We are the Seven Super Girls, a secondary level team participating in Destination Imagination! Destination Imagination is a global competition based around S.T.E.A.M.
Our team was chosen to go to Global Finals. In this final tournament, teams from all over the world come to compete! We accomplished this by earning 1st place in our state tournament. In addition, we earned the DaVinci award, given to a team for having a unique approach to a solution, for risk taking, and for outstanding creativity! We worked really hard for months to earn these special awards!
Our team has already earned a $500 scholarship to help us get to Globals! We achieved this by winning 1st place in the "Buddy Team Challenge," a fast-paced, creative challenge that tested not only our problem-solving skills but also our ability to collaborate quickly and effectively. For this challenge, we were paired with another secondary team from Northern Virginia. Together, we had to tackle what was almost like an Instant Challenge, requiring us to brainstorm, plan, and execute a solution in a very limited amount of time. Despite never having worked together before, we communicated well, combined our strengths, and came up with a creative and cohesive response. Our teamwork paid off and helped us come out on top against other pairs of teams!
We chose to participate in the scientific challenge, which required having to make a device, called "Technobabble Depictor", using technical methods. The technobabble depictor is composed of Arduino, 3D printed components, and cardboard. We coded a program with Arduino IDE to make a servo motor rotate when the distance sensor senses an object close enough to convert the rotational motion from the motor into translational motion that allows the claw to retract and extend. The depictor is meant to resemble a device that extracts diamonds from the ground. To display this, we created a diamond prop to activate the distance sensor!
This convinced the judges to give us the only DaVinci award out of every competing team!
Here is a picture of our Technobabble Depictor!
In addition to our main performance, we participated in an "Instant Challenge" where we were presented with a brief, unexpected challenge and evaluated on our ability to work together and find a creative solution!
For months, our team practiced and prepared different Instant Challenge scenarios that involved team work, engineering, acting, improv, and thinking on your feet! This amount of preparation was what made us able to score the highest out of our level!
Including all fees and expenses, we must raise $11,826 in total! Money donated will help us pay for registration fees, hotel costs, flying, props, shipping, etc. Every donation makes a difference towards our goal!
Going to Global Finals is a really special experience! Teams come from all over the world, and it’s amazing to see the different ideas and creativity they bring! Everyone solves the same challenge in completely different ways, and you get to learn so much just by watching them! You also get to meet people from other countries, learn about their cultures, and make new friends! It’s not just about competing—it’s about sharing, learning, and being inspired by what others create!
