On the evening of Saturday June 27/2020 Jakob was walking on the Algonquin Trail (corner of Daniel and William street in Arnprior) with a few friends, when he tripped and fell approximately 17 feet onto a concrete slab, head first. This area was not barricaded or marked off at the time of the accident; however, it was immediately blocked off once the Town of Arnprior was notified of the accident.
Jakob was found without vital signs and was to be airlifted by Ornge to CHEO but the helicopter was unable to land at two different locations due to the weather that evening and was rushed to the Arnprior Hospital where a land Ornge vehicle transported him directly to Ottawa. When he arrived at CHEO Jakob had no brain activity and was rushed into CT scans and MRI's. These scans determined that Jakob did not have a brain bleed but rather a brain bruise (miracle)! At this point he was paralyzed, but ALIVE!
Over time it was discovered that Jakob has suffered several traumatic, permanent and life altering injuries. He will never be the athlete he once was and always dreamed to be.
He has skull, orbital and cheek fractures which all require plastic surgery, permanent vision loss in his right eye and requires special glasses to heal the damaged eye and then another pair of glasses to protect the functioning eye. His long term memory is perfect but he has short term memory loss as a result, hopefully this is not permanent. He cracked several ribs on his left side which has compressed his left lung, affecting his breathing, heart rate and blood pressure. He has cracked and missing teeth from the impact, and will be needing extensive dental work. He is currently on a soft food diet because he cannot chew and has lost 14 pounds in only 5 days.
Unfortunately, we found out today that our private insurance carrier does not offer any financial assistance for the plastic surgeries, dental work, eye glasses, assistive devices, travel or therapy. It is very difficult to ask for financial help (especially during Covid), but so many have reached out wanting to help. Anything is appreciated, whether it be monetary, a message/text, phone call, flowers or meals. Jakob does have 2younger siblings at home that need to be cared for as well, and I have been unable to return to work due to the daycare closure with Covid. I will need to remain home with Jakob over the next few months to care for him, travel to appointments and provide care after surgery.
Jakob is a MEDICAL MIRACLE and is so very lucky to be here with us today.
