Support Owen Bell’s Long Journey to Recovery

As many of you know, on Sunday morning 7/28, Owen Bell was heading out to run a wrestling clinic at Headhunters Wrestling Club. About a mile from his house his car left the road for an unknown reason and struck a fence. Owen was airlifted to Shock Trauma where doctors were able to save his life. However, he sustained a severe Traumatic Brain Injury and remains in UMD Medical Center Shock Trauma ICU.

Everyone who knows Owen knows he is an amazing wrestler. He just finished his freshman year at Bucknell University wrestling with their Division I team. But Owen is also a serious engineering student, supportive teammate, quietly funny, kind, humble and just such an amazing good-hearted young man. He is the heart of the Bosnick/Bell family. He is resilient and we all know that if anyone can recover from such a serious TBI, it’s Owen.

It is important to remain positive and everyone’s prayers and support bring a lot of comfort to Terri and Adam. The doctors keep repeating that Owen is 19 and strong, which helps a lot. However, it’s only been a week since his accident and there are still many unknowns. Terri and Adam have been told consistently that recovery will be long and slow.

The predicted time of recovery, potential surgeries, and assistance in recovery are yet to be determined, but will eventually involve a transfer to an Acute Care Rehabilitation center and then eventually home care.

It can take anywhere from many months to years to recover from as severe an injury as Owen has sustained. During that time there will be many costs that are not covered by the Bell’s health insurance: short-term living arrangements so that Terri and Adam can be close to Owen to manage his care, any medical equipment Owen needs, modifications to their home, many different rehabilitation services to help Owen relearn any physical and mental abilities he has lost, living expenses and many other expenses that are still unknown.
