The project
Should we want to label Salwa Jaradat’s musical project, we could find many words: feminist, Palestinian, Arabic, rooted… But maybe this doesn’t matter. What matters is the beauty of the process: gathering five Arabic musicians (voice, oud, violin , qanoun, percussion) for two weeks in a remote Lebanese village, reading poems of forgotten Sufi women and composing collectively to record a unique album, at the crossroad between a forgotten feminine Sufi culture and a contemporary musical journey.
In this process, every step matters, from the musicians’ journey from various places in Europe to the Lebanese village of Hammana, to the two weeks intensive residency there, the studio recording and the production of the album. This is why she needs your help.
Who is Salwa Jaradat?
A 33-years old talented Palestinian singer and musicologist who has been based in Beirut for more than 8 years. She has been singing in some of the most famous venues in the Lebanese capital such as Metro al-Madina. She has also recorded songs with the Lebanese electronic musician Etyen.
Why this album?
For several years, she has archived and digitized Arabic classical music with Amar Foundation. From this experience, she realized that Arabic classical musical history is mainly made by men, about men. Her answer to the neglect of Arabic classical feminine musicians has been both creative and daring. She has embodied these women singers in cabaret shows in Metro Al-Madina, the best venue in Beirut when it comes to independent Arabic music.
She then discovered that Arabic Sufi poetess had also been the victim of the same kind of oversight. In short, everyone knows Rumi, but who ever heard of A'isha al-Ba'uniyya? This album is a tribute to the beauty of women Sufi poetesses, as well as a way to bring them back from collective oblivion. And of course, it is a musician journey drawing from Arabic musical heritage to create a contemporary improvised album.
How can you help?
Salwa is receiving the mentorship support from Cultural Resources, an NGO supporting artists in the Arab world.
Salwa still needs funds for this project, these $10.000 are to help secure the musician fees for the art residency that will happen in August with the support of Hammana Art House.
Help Salwa make her debut album come true!
