These photos were taken the beginning of last October (2022) and as you can see, her diagnosis has moved quick. After numerous tests, scans and biopsies, it was confirmed that my mother has stage 4 Adenocarcinoma Lung Cancer that is incurable. Her cancer is primarily in her right lung and the tumor is so large that it is pressing on her bronchial tube and restricts her airway. When the cancer was confirmed on December 27, we were also made aware that it had already spread to her left lung, liver, lymph nodes, and pelvic and spinal bones. A future test would need to be conducted to rule out or confirm the spread to her brain.
At that time, treatment was an option so she agreed on 2 types of Chemotherapy and one type of Immunotherapy. Two days later, she was hospitalized for 9 days. Her oxygen was low, her tumors had grown, she has multiple blood clots in her lungs and left leg and she had fluid in her lungs. During our hospital stay she agreed to begin radiation in hopes that the tumor would shrink and that she would be able to breathe better and have a fighting chance at a decent quality of life.
She was home for 4 days before we had to make a trip back to UNMC. Every night her pain and symptoms were worsening and they were becoming unmanageable for Jim and myself. This time, she spent 3 days in the hospital and during that stay we found out the daunting news: her cancer has progressed beyond a treatment that could manage it and we were in need of hospice care. So, here we are, caring for my mother in her home with the assistance of hospice.
If you all know my mother, there’s a few prominent things about her: Family is everything and She CANT sit still. As you can imagine, it is very hard for her to see her family hurting and it’s killing her to sit in a chair all day without the energy to move. If you would rather donate in another way, such cards of support or care packages, we can provide her contact information. I have also created an Amazon wishlist of things she would like or is need of and there is also a meal train to help lighten the load off of Jim. If none of these work for you, then all we ask is for you to keep her in your prayers.
Your financial donation will assist in medical costs, supplies not covered by hospice, and funeral and memorial expenses and is appreciated more than you could know. Her husband has quit working since she needs 24/7 care and her income has been reduced due to disability benefits so this will also be helping with their monthly bills. This is an extremely difficult time knowing we have weeks to months left with her and seeing how much pain she has.
Pamela is 63, married to James Perales, has three children: Amanda, Shyla and Austin, and six grandchildren. She has worked in the medical field for the past 30+ years helping those who cannot help themselves to her most recent job in behavioral health. She is a simple woman who loves and genuinely appreciates all things of life. She is the light when it’s dark and the life to the party. She is our love.
