"Hi, my name is Paola Ochoa, and I’m 41 years old. I’ve lived my whole life in Riverside, and it’s the place I call home. But more than that, I’m a mother to an incredible 6-year-old girl named Carmen, who is my world. She gives me the reason to get up every morning and keep pushing forward. No matter how hard the day is, I do it for her—because she looks up to me, and she depends on me.
In July of last year, I received the news no one ever wants to hear: I have stage 3 breast cancer. I remember that moment like it was yesterday. I was in complete disbelief. I couldn’t stop crying. As the tears flowed, I kept saying to my doctor, “I have a 6-year-old. She needs me. She’s glued to my hip.” The weight of that statement hit me hard. Not only was I facing cancer, but I was also newly single and had to leave a job I loved as a cook/aide at a preschool. It wasn’t easy, but the joy of seeing those kids light up when I walked into the classroom always made my day better. Sadly, the side effects of my treatment made it impossible for me to continue working, so I had to give my two weeks’ notice.
To make matters even harder, I was denied disability benefits due to my work not offering it. That was a curveball I wasn’t prepared for, and it’s left me in a really tough financial situation. Now, I’m faced with the challenge of paying for my treatments while keeping up with the cost of living. It’s becoming harder and harder to balance my finances, and every day feels like I’m making difficult choices—what’s more important today: buying groceries or making sure I can get the treatment I need?
Through all of this, my daughter Carmen has been my constant source of strength. She’s my big helper, always by my side, helping me when I feel sick or exhausted. Even at 6, she’s maturing so fast—she stays calm when I’m feeling my worst, and she helps me with whatever she can. She’s the reason I keep fighting, because she deserves a mother who’s strong and present in her life.
As I continue my battle against cancer, I’m also turning to my community for help. Financial assistance is critical right now, and I’m doing everything I can to apply for support. It’s overwhelming at times, but I know I can’t give up. My daughter needs me, and I’m doing my best to stay strong and positive, no matter how many challenges come my way.
If you’re able to help, whether through a donation or simply sharing my story, I’d be beyond grateful. Anything makes a difference right now. I know there’s strength in numbers, and with the support of those around me, I’m hopeful that I can get through this and continue to be the mother my daughter needs.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to read my story. Every little bit of support helps, and I truly appreciate it.
With love and hope,
Paola Ochoa"
