Hi I'm pepper ️ and I love bikes!
In 2009 I helped start a community bicycle project out of my basement in Kalamazoo Michigan. In about 3 years we put around 300+ bikes on the road, and helped folks fix countless others.
In 2012 I left home and started hitchhiking and hopping freight trains. For about a decade I hobo'd my way across all 50 states, some of Mexico and a good chunk of Canada, finally landing in Alaska. After a rough summer, I decided to come back to the lower 48 and try something different; Pepper's Mobile Bike Repair.
My idea is simple, create a tool library that I can easily pack down and mobilize to bring bicycle repair and mechanics to customers and other folks in need. My goal is to start small, build what I need just using my bicycle and trailer, advertising locally wherever I happen to be. Combining my love of traveling and my love of bicycles I believe I can create a way to survive that's sustainable for my lifestyle.
After a decade of houselessness and being transient, I've acquired a lot of trauma. I've been dealing with things well for years but this past spring I had a breakdown. After finally leaving Alaska this fall, and then riding my bicycle from Madison Wisconsin to st Louis it came to me what I needed to do.
I'm asking for a small start up cost of around 200 bucks. I need a small portable basic tool kit, a pump, lots and lots of patches and a few other basic tools like cable cutters and pullers, chain breakers, etc. I will be building an ever changing Amazon wishlist, please reach out if you'd like to donate that way.
Another goal of this project will be to help houseless/homeless/folks in crisis for free or small donation.
Prices will be based on the job performed, IE 20 bucks for a kids bike tune up, 5 bucks for tube change outs etc with a sliding scale donation asked for distance traveled.
This will be an ever changing project, but right now, along with door dashing and delivering by bicycle, I know I can make this work wherever I land. Rn I'm currently couch surfing and living in my tent, another main goal of this project would be for it to be a second source of income for me once I'm able to find a secure living situation.
