Support Prakash Churaman and His Family
Donation protected
After nearly eight years between Rikers, upstate prison, and house arrest, Prakash Churaman is free and finally home--for good!
This is a momentous victory! A victory for Prakash and his family, for our communities, and for our longer struggle to #FreeThemAll from the clutches of systemic racism and mass incarceration.
Now, Prakash and his family can finally focus on healing and putting this traumatic experience behind them. Please consider donating to support the family to pay for basic needs like rent, baby supplies, and other bills as they get back on their feet.
Nothing can erase the years of torture the Queens legal system has put them through. That's why it's important that we continue to show up and support Prakash and family as a part of our commitments to loving and protecting each other.
More information on Prakash’s Case below:
At 15 years old, Prakash Churaman was stolen from his mother by the NYPD and coerced into confessing to a crime which he did not commit. Detectives handcuffed Prakash to a metal bar in the precinct and manipulated him into confessing to the murder of his best friend.
No DNA evidence was ever found to link Prakash to the crime. Detectives needed a confession in order to charge Prakash, which is why he was not charged until after he was forced to provide a false confession. The prosecution’s case was built on this false confession.
Prakash spent his adolescence in a cage on Rikers Island as he waited for almost 4 years for his first trial. The conviction which resulted from Prakash’s first trial was overturned by the appellate court a few years later and Prakash was able to secure bail thanks to his organizing and the support of his allies.
On June 6, 2022, after a year and a half of sustained organizing of Prakash and the Free Prakash Alliance, we successfully pushed Queens DA Melinda Katz to drop all the charges against Prakash!
