My name is Randy. I'm an independent freelance mechanic (Randy's Garage) in White Plains, KY. Yesterday, Saturday, March 22, 2025, my shop burned down, taking with it two customers' vehicles: Tommy's very nice '95 GMC Sierra along with all his brand new parts that he had $28,000 invested in, and Daniel's Jeep TJ. Also burned up were both of my boys' Honda dirt bikes, keys to several customers' cars, my '69 Mustang, all of my tools and equipment that I made my living with, and damage to six of my other vehicles. I offered my services as affordably as I could, not marking up parts and only just raising my rate to $65 an hour. I took a massive pay cut when I left my last job in 2019 and was happy to provide good work at a fraction of the average cost. The way I was able to do that was to have very low overhead costs. The building was insured (under $25k if I'm reading my policy correctly), but I did not have business liability insurance.
Total damage/replacement cost is easily over $100,000
As I'm anticipating insurance to fall way short, the $36,000 I'm looking to raise is to help cover the actual value of Tommy and Daniel's vehicles first. Keys belonging to other customers second. My boys' motorcycles third. Lastly, if any is left over, my own loss.
