Support Recovery After Thyroid Cancer Surgery

          For those of you who have not been aware of my recent medical concerns, I have had some misfortunate health issues lately. I had an ultrasound and biopsy done back in April for a nodule found on the left side of my thyroid. Unfortunately, the biopsy indicated that due to cancer, it was recommended that I have the left side of my thyroid removed. Due to the urgency of the issue, I underwent surgery yesterday. While I am grateful to have been able to have the surgery, it did occur much sooner than expected and I did not have an opportunity to establish Paid Medical Leave) PML.  I am happy to report that the surgery and everything has gone well so far and I have a follow up appointment in about 10 days, they will also be calling me in about a week for the pathology results. 

My surgeon currently has the paperwork for PML and he said it’ll be emailed back to me in a few days. After that, I’ll still need to submit it to be approved which may or may not occur. Regardless, I will need to take about a week off to recover. As it stands, PML only matches your paycheck 60-80% and a large part of my income is tip based. Further, I was also made aware that I will be receiving a separate bill for the anesthesia used for my surgery which can range a few hundred dollars. As such, I am reaching out to my community to ask for support. Even the smallest contributions will really make a difference right now, as I navigate all of this uncertainty with my health and the significant impact it has had on my finances.
