Support refugee in the USA from the Russian war

Dear family and friends,

Our Russian relative, Alex is seeking support to begin his new life as a refugee in the United States. In September 2022 Alex fled his home in Russia, after the Russian government issued a military draft requiring men to fight the war in Ukraine. Vehemently against the war and refusing to fight in Ukraine, he made a difficult journey from Russia to Kazakhstan to Mexico, where he lived in a shelter in Tijuana for several weeks before safely crossing the border to the United States. He is now temporarily living with distant relatives and has started the process for political asylum.

When the Russian war started in 2022, life became even more difficult in his hometown. Due to his political opinions and opposition to war in Ukraine, Alex experienced various forms of torture and abuse by the Russian government. It is no longer safe for him to live in his home country, and he is hoping to begin a new life in the United States.

Alex, thirty-one years old, is a kind, caring and cheerful person. He is currently enrolled in free 15-hour/week English course at a local community college. He likes running, biking, and making people laugh. In the future, Alex hopes to study and find work in the medical field.

How you can help

Life as a new refugee in the USA has enormous expenses, not only for day-to-day costs, such as food and rent and basic needs, but to cover past debts of the migration journey and to navigate the immigration system, legally and administratively. Alex comes from a very humble background and due to Alex’s current legal status, he is not legally permitted to work until March 2024 at the earliest.

Alex needs support towards the following costs:
$16,000: legal, translation, and administrative fees to seek political asylum in the US, and prevent deportation back to Russia
$5,000: medical fees to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from the war
$3,000: repaying personal debts for flights to escape Russia
$6,000: contribution to living expenses through March 2024

We know these are challenging times for so many but for those who are able to contribute, please do so via this GoFundMe, setup by his new family in the USA. No amount is too small and is received with gratitude.

*Please note that some additional personal details were excluded in order to protect Alex's identity in case he is forced to return to Russia.
