Support repair efforts at the Carbondale Super Splash Park
Donation protected
Late at night on August 9th, a group of people broke into the Carbondale Super Splash Park and made the disappointing decision to vandalize multiple areas within the facility. We were devastated the next morning to find our pools in complete disarray, filled with broken glass and pool furniture. This was just the beginning of the damage. This group had broken into and torn apart our front entrance and women’s bathroom. We ended up having to completely empty and refill our lazy river and leisure pool due to damage. Amid efforts to salvage our equipment and amenities, we discovered this vandalism has cost us more than $10,000.
Over the last several days, Carbondale Park District employees went above and beyond to make repairs and clean up hazards. Our first and foremost concern is always the safety of our community. The damage goes far beyond physical equipment. What makes us the most sad is that our community was robbed of the chance to enjoy their final summer days before school starts at the Splash Park. Many of our hard working summer staff lost wages they were depending on.
There is a possibility that insurance may cover some of the costs associated with the events of 8/09/24. We will not know the full answer to that question for some time. It will not cover all of them.
We started this journey with admiration for the outpouring of support by many in the community. This Go Fund Me was born out of that because many asked how they could help. The monies donated will go first towards staff that were scheduled to work that weekend with any remainder to go towards repairs to the physical components that were damaged.
We are so grateful for the incredible support our community and friends of the Splash Park have shown us. It has meant so much to us and has filled our hearts with pride.
