Support reporters in Dallas, Forth Worth, & Austin
The journalists at the Austin American-Statesman, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and the Dallas Morning News are currently covering a crisis in their state.
Millions in Texas are without power as winter storms are devastating communities and causing immense pain. There is still not a clear timeline on when power will be restored and people are facing the prospects of increasingly cold nights with little relief in sight.
The journalists at these publications are working tirelessly to provide information to their communities all while being hit by the same threats to their health and safety. This fund is being organized to help the journalists that are struggling with power, housing, and protection for themselves while doing their jobs.
Every bit helps and will ensure that these reporters can remain safe while providing the life saving coverage that people need to make informed decisions during this time of crisis. This fundraiser is being managed on behalf of the journalists and all funds will go directly to supporting them in their efforts.
All of the funds will be distributed to the journalists who are continuing to work on the ground through the crisis. The funds will go towards addressing their most pressing safety needs regarding housing, utilities, etc. As the crisis continues, the costs to stay warm and safe are only going up. These funds will help to provide support and help with those costs in the fallout of this crisis.
Leah Waters is the beneficiary as she is the point person at the Dallas Morning News who has agreed to coordinate the distribution of funds. They are moving the money to a mutual fund Venmo shared among three Texas newsrooms, tracking the disbursements publicly and tracking them on a spreadsheet.
