Support Rev. Ben Boswell: Advocate for Racial Justice

Two weeks after Rev. Benjamin Boswell, the Senior Minister at Myers Park Baptist Church, preached a sermon, "Where Do We Go From Here?" he was "ousted." According to one member of the Board of Deacons who was present, "This termination is rooted in the racist idea that there is too much of a focus on 'racial justice.' They have no plan for how to improve the church; they simply desire to take the church backwards and embrace whiteness. Make no mistake, this is about white comfort and an unease with living out the mission of the church. In particular, the Statement on Racism Against African-Americans that was approved by a congregational vote in 2019."

Many of us have had the privilege of hearing Ben preach from pulpits in Alexandria, Virginia, as well as Cary and Charlotte, North Carolina. To know Ben, the author of the best-selling books, Confronting Whiteness and For the Facing of This Hour, is to know a man who has wrestled with being white and its many faces and attempted to create a world that works for all. Ben is a Duke University graduate and recipient of the MLK Medallion Award from the city of Charlotte.

This is the most serious roadblock Ben has faced in his ministry. He needs our support in order to maintain his family and to continue to preach the message of radical reconciliation that we all need.
