On August 20, 2024, a fire broke out in my sister’s attic due to hidden illegal electrical wiring from the previous owner. If you know her story at all, you understand that she has experienced two difficult years of compounding health issues and several surgeries, as well as the loss of being able to work, all while caring for her daughter.
I have attached a letter from my sister below. I pray that God touches the hearts of those reading this. Please help my sister rebuild her home and continue on with the purpose God has placed on her life.
Faith Through Fire:
“My name is Rhonda Carter. I am a 40-year-old single mom and recent Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner graduate from Stonybrook University. My passion for helping children prompted me to further my career as a psychiatric nurse by returning to school to obtain my degree as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and I have happily dedicated the last five years of my nursing career to assisting children in the greater Rochester area in need of behavioral and mental health services.
Unfortunately, while on the job in December 2023, I was assaulted by a patient and suffered injuries that left me permanently blind in my left eye and disabled in my right leg. I underwent four eye surgeries in an attempt to save my left eye (which have all proven to be unsuccessful). Additionally, during this time, I was diagnosed with a clotting disorder and had to undergo an emergency bypass surgery to save my right leg.
Most recently, on August 20th, two weeks before the start of my daughter’s freshman year in high school, our attic caught on fire due to an illegally concealed electrical wiring in the attic that was installed by the previous homeowner. By the grace of God, my daughter and I were able to walk out of our home unharmed by the fire. However, due to the damage from the fire and water, the top floor of my home is condemned and there is significant water damage throughout my home. I am now coming to terms with the reality that in a short span of time I have had to switch my focus from completing my Nurse Practitioner boards to learning to live with a permanent disability and the necessity for life-long medication, the loss of my eye, and now the rebuilding of my home after a fire.
However, despite everything that has happened to me, I believe I am greatly loved by God and that He has a purpose for everything that happens in my life. I am beyond grateful for the love and support everyone has shown so far after the fire. With so many unknowns ahead, I am still unsure of what the total expenses will be. But I thank you from the bottom of my heart for any donations. Thank you for helping me rebuild during this difficult season.”
