Support Ro's Journey to Study Abroad in Japan

Donation protected
Dear friends and family,
I hope this message finds you well.
I want to share something that has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember: Japan. Its architecture, culture, music, language, and history have always fascinated me deeply. From a young age, influenced by my mother's interest in the East, I immersed myself in Eastern ideology and art. I would read about myths and look at old Japanese art when we would visit the art institute.

As I grew older, my fascination evolved with the discovery of anime and manga. I became obsessed with manga/anime. I watched countless shows, read as many manga as I could find, and recreated pages of the manga since the artistry behind them was so fun to me. These artistic mediums not only entertained me but also inspired me creatively. They played a significant role in shaping me as an artist today. Over time, my interest shifted towards Japan's rich history and cultural development. I've dedicated myself to studying Japanese language, history, and literature as part of my Minor Degree at DePaul University. I took a class on the history of Japan starting in the Tokugawa period of 1603. This era stands out as one of the most enriching and captivating periods in human history, offering me valuable insights into how societies develop and cultures thrive over centuries.

So why am I telling you this?

When I learned about DePaul's study abroad program offering a semester in Japan at Temple University, Tokyo, I was the first one in line for it. I am not joking when I say that I was the first one to sign up for the 2025 winter-spring program. I had the date saved for when sign-ups opened since my freshmen year in 2022. This opportunity to study art and deepen my understanding of Japanese culture feels like a culmination of years of passion and dedication. The program, however, comes with a substantial cost—$20,000 in total—which includes the program fee—$15,000—, travel expenses, food, and living costs.

While I've been very privileged thus far, due to our current economic position, that money would have to come out of my pocket. My tuition is covered by my father but the program itself is too much of a financial burden. I've been working diligently to save money and have secured $6,000 in scholarships, but I still need financial assistance to make this dream a reality. I am reaching out to you today to humbly ask for your support. I would not be asking if I didn't think this experience was worth it. I understand that not everyone can help, but if you are inclined to help, know that I will be forever grateful. Your contribution, no matter the size, will pave the road that will take me to Japan.

If you have any questions about the program or would like to discuss Japan with me, please don't hesitate to reach out. I would love to discuss anything about Japan! This is truly a dream come true and I would not be here without everyone who has supported me throughout my life.

Thank you so much for reading my story.
Sincerely,

-Ro
