Over the past 4 years, Roy has biked over 5,489 km and raised over $6,566.61 for GCC. For 2021, Roy plans to ride over 2000 kms and hopes to raise $10,000 for GCC. When asked why he rides, Roy says, “Right now, over 1,400 children are diagnosed with cancer every year, and it's the biggest killer of children from disease in Canada. Kids should be living life, not fighting for it.”

· Funds for family support vehicle costs (gas, food, ferry, accommodation for long return trip to Alberta)
His personal inspiration, along with riding for children with cancer, will be his family and community. He will be riding in honour of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women: Chantel Moore, Lisa Marie Young, Nelly George, Trina Adalyn Silva, Christina Ward, Norma Johnson, and Kayla John.
In previous years, Roy completed two all-day rides: 24-hours (Victoria to Tofino) and 36-hours (Port Hardy to Victoria). Roy has biked almost every rideable highway on Vancouver Island. Now, he is excited to explore further locations and increase awareness of children with cancer, along with raising more funds for them. Roy says, “In most cases my riding abilities are hindered by my funds. I take the time out from work, without pay, to raise funds for my cause and put my cycling time in.”
Right now, Roy’s current bike is 2 years old. He has put over 6000 kms on it. Roy says, “I’ve had dozens of flats and broken spokes. I’ve needed to change tubes and tires all the time while on the road. He has replaced all moving components on the bike at least once due to his rugged rides in our West Coast weather. At this point, Roy needs a new road bike to continue his journeys.
Roy’s mom, Faith, says that she remembers when he was a young boy, how determined he was about many things. He set his goals, pursued his dreams, and accomplished them most every time. Nowadays, Roy works at Nanaimo Regional Recycling. Roy says, “I’ve been at my current location for 5 years as supervisor and I’ve worked for the company for 10 years.”
Faith says that the huge bicycling trip Roy is planning from Edmonton, Alberta to Vancouver, B.C. is very scary for her. She has never been to the Rockies or to Alberta. However, she will join Roy on this trip to provide emotional and physical support; just as she has done on all his trips. Faith will support him all the way. “I call him my son, my hero!”
Roy says that he will have family supporting him all along the way, and on his big trip, even his grannie will be there. He wants to put all his focus into, “Riding my bike for the kids,” and not worrying about finances for expenses along the way. Roy is very proud of the fact that he has had people from all over Canada thanking and cheering him on for the big rides he has completed. Roy says, “Thank you too! Your support will change little lives.”
