Support Runestone Ranch: First Responder Wellness

Tax deductible

At Runestone Ranch , we are on a mission to address a critical issue affecting the first responders who dedicate their lives to protecting our communities. These heroes, who stand on the front lines of danger, often face a silent battle with the stress and psychological toll that their work imposes. The barriers to seeking help are many—stigma, fear of career repercussions, and a lack of accessible resources—all of which contribute to a culture where mental health struggles are too often ignored.

Our founders , both retired police officers, experienced this struggle firsthand. They recognized that, despite the outward perception of strength, first responders are human, and the stressors and mental health challenges they face are profound. Inspired by their own journeys through trauma and healing, they established Runestone Ranch to fill a critical gap in support.

Runestone Ranch is not just a retreat; it’s a movement aimed at transforming the way we understand and support first responders. We operate on a simple but powerful philosophy: healing is most effective when it’s guided by those who have walked a similar path. Our peer-driven approach, led by certified Advanced Peer Specialists—seasoned first responders themselves—creates an environment where participants can connect with others who truly understand their experiences.

But why is this so important? Understanding the reluctance of first responders to seek help requires a look at the psychological factors at play. The Theory of Planned Behavior provides a framework for understanding these barriers. First responders may hold negative attitudes toward seeking mental health support, seeing it as a sign of weakness or fearing it could jeopardize their careers. Social pressure within their departments and perceived barriers to accessing confidential resources further discourage them from seeking help. These factors create a perfect storm, leading to avoidance, burn out, and worsening mental health conditions.

Runestone Ranch is designed to counter these forces by changing attitudes, modifying perceived norms, and increasing perceived control over the ability to seek help. We offer a safe, confidential environment where first responders can explore self-disclosure, develop regulation techniques, and engage in a holistic mind-body-finance literacy approach. This comprehensive support system not only aids in recovery but also acts as a preventative measure, equipping first responders with the tools they need to manage and overcome trauma before it spirals out of control.

We’ve already begun making a difference through our online peer support sessions, but this is just the beginning. To bring our vision to full fruition, we need your help. Our 102-acre property is currently undergoing a transformative construction phase as we raise funds to build out the arched cabins that will be utilized as lodging facilities during our 6-day retreats. Your contributions will enable us to construct these essential facilities, develop and refine our curriculum, and offer scholarships to ensure that financial barriers do not prevent anyone from accessing our programs.

By supporting Runestone Ranch, you are investing in the well-being of those who keep us safe. You are helping to change the culture around mental health in first responder communities, reducing the stigma, and making it easier for these heroes to seek the help they need. The impact of your contribution extends beyond the individual; healthier first responders lead to safer, more engaged communities, reduced costs for municipalities, and a stronger, more resilient workforce.

Your donation, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to making this vision a reality. Thank you for helping us build a legacy of healing, resilience, and hope for our nation’s first responders.
