Support Ryan McCloskey's Hand Recovery Journey

Donation protected
As many of you may know, on Thursday, July 4th, Ryan was involved in a significant firework accident in Long Island, New York. He was attending his girlfriend’s neighborhood Fourth of July event and without thinking, Ryan quickly grabbed a firework from a small boy’s hand which caused his own hand to bear the impact of this firework. He was immediately taken to Good Samaritan Hospital (a hospital appropriately named for Ryan), whereupon Ryan‘s hand was worked on by a hand surgeon that was able to keep his left hand and some fingers in tact. His hand was so severely damaged that it was unrecognizable. The work performed by the on-call hand surgeon that evening was miraculous! It has set a stage whereupon Ryan’s new hand surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC has been able to devise a long term treatment plan for Ryan. This unfortunate accident has left Ryan’s left hand severely damaged and is requiring multiple surgeries to hopefully bring his left hand back to life.

Everyone who knows Ryan knows he is a kind, quietly funny, generous, humble and an amazingly, good-hearted young man. Of the McCloskey’s three wonderful children, Ryan is and will always be the mainstay. He is the anchor of the McCloskey household and has always been relied upon and counted on by, not only their immediate family, but by friends and neighbors alike.

Ryan is an outdoorsman. He loves golfing, skiing, biking and camping. He achieved his Eagle Scout Award as a senior in high school. Through this achievement alone, he learned how to have strength of mind, body and soul, along with building the courage to persevere no matter what hardships may come his way.

Ryan has embraced this journey, without complaint, but with positivity and hope. Ryan has had to put his electrician career on hold after only starting out right after high school graduation, just four years ago. He started his career working under the direction of a local Eastchester electrician for two years and then secured another electrician position in Rye working in commercial and residential properties. Not yet in the electrical union, but he continues to expand his electrical knowledge and experience, under the leadership of a great boss these last two years.

It is important to remain positive and everyone’s prayers and support bring a lot of comfort to Ryan’s parents. Ryan’s doctor keeps repeating that he is young and strong, which helps a lot. However, it’s only been a month since his accident and there are still many unknowns. Ryan’s parents have been told consistently that recovery will be long and slow.

The predicted time of recovery, potential next surgeries, and post recovery needs are yet to be fully determined. With Ryan’s resilience, we all know that if anyone can recover from such a serious accident, Ryan can.

Since the time of the accident. Ryan has had four surgeries so far and will have his fifth surgery on his 21st birthday on August 12th. It is expected that Ryan will have a two year journey of recovery before he may be able to use his left hand again and hopefully return to work. It is too soon to tell the extent of the usage he will have. During this month of adjustment and settling into Ryan’s “new normal”, his disability assistance from work, along with his parent’s health insurance are still not covering the hospital costs incurred and other unexpected medical / living expenses that have arisen and other expenses that are expected to be incurred. There are still many unknowns and while his parents are helping offset Ryan’s expenses, there is still a long road ahead and a long life for Ryan to lead after all is said and done.

Any donation that you can make will be greatly appreciated and will be directed to a trust in Ryan’s name to support his recovery needs. Please share this Go Fund Me link with others who know Ryan McCloskey and are praying for his full recovery. Thank you in advance for your continued thoughts and prayers.
