Ryan MacKinnon carried a heart and soul unlike any other. We began our journey as comedians, quickly blossoming into friends, then roommates, and ultimately forming an unbreakable brotherhood. On September 28th, 2024, at 10:38 a.m., Ryan peacefully departed from this world, surrounded by those who cherished him deeply. It breaks my heart to share these words, as the reality of his absence still settles in.
Ryan was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in the summer of 2023. From that moment, it became my life’s mission to ensure he knew just how profoundly loved he was and the incredible impact he had on so many lives. Day after day, week after week, friends and family gathered in his childhood home in Palatine, Illinois. We filled those days with holiday barbecues, shared meals, games, laughter, and an outpouring of love and support.
On September 17th, we organized a heartfelt fundraiser at Ryan’s favorite comedy club, The Laugh Factory Chicago. Over 200 people from every corner of his life came together in a beautiful display of love and unity. Friends, family, and the vibrant Chicago comedy community filled the room with laughter and warmth. That night, we raised over $40,000 for Ryan and his family—a beautiful night that no one realized was our grand farewell.
Ryan, you have transformed me in countless ways. You showed me how to love in a way I never thought possible. I am committed to living in your honor, to sharing laughter in your spirit, and to touching the hearts of others as you did—though I often wonder if I can ever match your brilliance. You are my forever angel, Ryan Mackinnon. Though you may no longer be here in body, your presence remains incredibly strong; I can feel you watching over me as I write this.
My heart is shattered, and the pain is unlike anything I’ve ever known. Yet, as I grieve your passing, I know I will learn to let you be the source of my joy rather than my sorrow. You are my hero, Ryan. Thank you for changing my life in monumental ways. I’ve surrounded myself with your childhood friends—they remind me of you in so many beautiful ways. It feels as though you’re just in the other room when they are around.
I am forever grateful that our last moment together was one filled with love, as I kissed your forehead, told you I loved you, and thanked you for being a part of my life. Tell those you love that you cherish them, and remind them every day. I love you, Brother. I know I will see you again. Until then, I’ll carry you with me in my dreams.
