Hello, my name is Batch Gueye, and I am the Artistic Director and Founder of Sabar Family Ltd, an Award Winning Black-led West African Performing Arts company. We are seeking your support to make the 8th edition of the Sabar Family Festival a reality from 7-8 September, 2024, in Bristol, UK.
About Us:
Sabar Family are thrilled to bring the 8th International Sabar Family Festival & Congress to life. Our mission is to craft a unique cultural experience that celebrates the spirit of West Africa and the wider African Diaspora, both in its timeless traditions and its ever-evolving expressions.
Sabar Family’s vision is to achieve: Equal respect, appreciation and joyful sharing of African culture, humanity and heritage.
Our mission involves:
Building Bridges: Inspired by authentic Griot West African culture and traditions; we seek to build bridges between UK and West Africa (and the wider diaspora), by working with local, national, and international artists to share and value different musical and dance heritages and cultures.
Breaking Barriers: We seek to enable greater cross-cultural understanding through fresh artistic collaborations and participatory education – breaking barriers to access to mainstream artistic opportunities, and creative employment and opportunities, whilst supporting the mentorship of youth and artists of African heritage.
Raising the Bar: Ensuring and maintaining high quality professional standards across all our work for artists, participants, and audiences. Redefining excellence in the education and experience of West African and diasporic dance and music by promoting holistic practice (percussion, song and dance) and always including historical context/storytelling to de-homogenise customs, dances and rhythms.
We pride ourselves on our professional reputation, high quality work and for our values of always being Welcoming (i.e., “Teraanga”), Authentic, Inclusive, Sustainable, Artist-led, and Adventurous.
How You Can Make a Difference:
Your financial support will help Sabar Family provide 15 bursary spaces for youth of African Heritage across Bristol and London, who will be recruited with our partners Babbasa and FUZE UK.
They will receive free access to Sabar Family Festival and Workshop Series, support with travel expenses, and mentorship from renowned artists of the African Diaspora.
Your financial support will also go towards platforming Black-owned and run businesses, artists, & creatives, to create agency and autonomy for the symposium by co-financing within the ecology.
To ensure the event's quality and success we are looking for financial support to cover production, logistics, and artist costs (e.g., international flight tickets, venues, tech and promo material).
What to Expect:
- 2-Day event showcasing the best of West African & Diaspora culture
