My name is Salome Chimuku. I am proud and excited to share that I have been elected to serve as an Oregon delegate to the Democratic National Convention in August 2024. The Democratic National Convention (DNC) occurs every four years and is a gathering of delegates representing all 50 states and the U.S. territories.
During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Democrats from across the country will tell our story directly to the American people as we come together to energize, organize, and mobilize to win. I will get to meet people from across the country, elected leaders, and community leaders. To read more about others in the Oregon delegation, click here .
I currently serve as the chair of the Multnomah County Democrats on a volunteer basis and work for a local Black-owned consulting firm. With this experience, I am hoping to go to Chicago with the goal of centering equity, pushing for more, and bringing thoughts and perspectives that are often shoved out. I will need help affording this trip and will share more about myself.
"Salomé’s love of social change started early – her parents were both political. She studied Political Science at Willamette University and worked her way through college. Her very first job in politics was working in the Secretary of State’s office under Kate Brown. She was just 19 years old when she took on a summer project with PolitiCorps, an intensive training program to groom future leaders for careers in public service. She was the youngest person ever to go through the program! She took a job with the Senate Majority Office and became known as a universal staffer – when someone went on sabbatical, vacation, got sick, or just overwhelmed, she’d step in. During in-between moments, she worked on issue campaigns, Willamette's Student Office of Equity and Empowerment, and voting rights/voter turnout efforts.
After graduation, she was the Public Policy and Advocacy Director for Unite Oregon and the Urban League but was a lobbyist for many of the grassroots organizations that didn’t have a full-time lobbyist on staff. Salomé worked on Criminal Justice Reform and Equity policy issues for years. She’s also a co-founder of the Black Resilience Fund – an emergency fund for Black Portlanders who need help paying their bills or finding services. Having worked pretty much every job in politics possible, Salomé is well-versed in organizing people, managing budgets, and providing other invaluable skills to promote Inclusion/Equity efforts."
