11/5 UPDATE: Our season has come to a close. Thank you to KTVU Channel 2 News for the amazing story they did on the team! And a million thanks to all of the incredibly generous donors. We are eternally grateful for your support. ❤️
If y'all know me at all, I NEVER do this. I have been off of Facebook for more than 3 years and I really only post on Instagram funny crap or stuff I am celebrating. But this is something new and exciting that is going on in my life and I am in real need of support from as many people as possible. Hence this post.
This year, I started working at San Rafael High School, Marin County's oldest public high school. We have close to 1200 students in attendance and it is truly a beautiful school. I am teaching English Language Development (ELD) and my Spanish is getting a SERIOUS workout. But I am also coaching their 1st ever Girls Flag Football team. This sport is taking off right now, and with it being featured in the upcoming 2028 Olympics in LA, it will only get bigger.
The girls at SRHS are particularly excited to be starting this team, as they have been fighting for this for a while. (In fact a few of them even went as far as to bring a Title IX argument before the local school board so there would be funding!) With that said, no one expected the turnout would be as amazing as it has turned out to be. I currently have 37 girls on the roster! These are girls grades 9-12, many of whom have never played a sport before. Some are 1st generation graduates. 1 is still learning English.
When we started out a month ago, all we had was 7 footballs. Our uniforms hadn't arrived, and when they did they didn't fit and we did not have enough of them. I had to buy flags so we had something to use out on the field while we waited for equipment. I hit up a dear friend of mine to design us the outstanding logo I used in this post, so we could begin to have some sort of presence on this campus. But otherwise, I have resorted to begging and borrowing (no stealing, yet) to get what we need to make this fly.
Anyone who has ever had a kid in sports knows how expensive things are. Anyone who has ever been a teacher knows how much of our OWN money we spend on supplies. Put those 2 dollar amounts together and you can begin to do the math of how much money I am spending to make the team successful. So, I am sending this plea out to you all in hopes that you might give something to help these girls have an incredible 1st season. (And help me not have to orchestrate a bank robery to pay for it!). Every little bit helps!
