Support Sanchez Siblings Travel to MX to Grieve Grandmother

Dearest friends and community,

This past Tuesday, July 2nd, we unexpectedly lost our beloved matriarch, our grandmother Juanita Flores Nieves, in Mexico City after a long battle with cancer. She had just turned 93 in June and was a true Guerrera (warrior) after valiantly fighting her illness for many years and previously beating it. But sadly, a new form of cancer returned two months ago that developed stronger than before. We are a tight-knit family, and this profound loss has devastated us all. Especially my mother, who, due to unjust and immoral US immigration policies (f**k borders), was unable to be by her mother’s side one last time to bid her farewell in her last days of life.

Me and my brother Uriel are expecting to travel to Mexico and provide much-needed logistics support to our tia Zoila, who is the pillar of our family and single-handedly cared for our grandmother until her last dying breath. Being both undocumented and DACA recipients, we do need to request advance parole to get the proper re-entry authorization. We are set to present our applications before USCIS early next week (the week of July 8th) and, hopefully, fly out together as soon as we’re approved.

Inflation is still a thing, and while we both have full-time work, the unexpected nature of this difficult life situation has come with numerous exceeding costs, so we are in dire need of support to cover some of the expenses. These include two last-minute round-trip flights (LAX to MEX), two USCIS application processing fees, a couple of outstanding medical/hospital bills, and the compounding funeral and burial costs.

We know times are hard, and we appreciate any contributions to help us reunite with our grandmother in what is now her resting place, in the representation of her grieving daughter and our mother, Susana. We will forever treasure the amazing memories with our Abuelita Juanita and the many laughs together with her, and we will uplift the long legacy of love and care she has bestowed on our shoulders. Queridos amigos y comunidad,

El pasado martes 2 de julio perdimos inesperadamente a nuestra querida matriarca, nuestra abuela Juanita Flores Nieves, en la Ciudad de México después de una larga batalla contra el cáncer. Acababa de cumplir 93 años en junio y era una verdadera Guerrera después de luchar valientemente contra su enfermedad durante muchos años y vencerla previamente. Pero, lamentablemente, hace dos meses le dio otro cáncer que se desarrolló con más fuerza que antes. Somos una familia muy unida y esta profunda pérdida nos ha devastado a todos. Especialmente mi madre, quien debido a las injustas e inmorales políticas migratorias estadounidenses, no pudo estar al lado de su madre una última vez para despedirse de ella en sus últimos días de vida.

Mi hermano Uriel y yo esperamos viajar a México y brindar el apoyo logístico que tanto necesita nuestra tía Zoila, quien es el pilar de nuestra familia y cuidó por sí sola a nuestra abuela hasta su último aliento. Al ser indocumentados como beneficiarios de DACA, necesitamos solicitar un permiso para obtener la autorización de reingreso adecuada. Estamos listos para presentar nuestras solicitudes ante USCIS a principios de la próxima semana (semana del 8 de julio) y, con suerte, volar juntos tan pronto como seamos aprobados.

La inflación sigue existiendo y, aunque ambos trabajamos a tiempo completo, la naturaleza inesperada de esta difícil situación de la vida ha traído consigo numerosos costos excesivos, por lo que necesitamos urgentemente apoyo para cubrir algunos de los gastos. Estos incluyen dos vuelos de ida y vuelta de último minuto (LAX a MEX), dos tarifas de procesamiento de solicitudes de USCIS, un par de facturas médicas/hospitalarias pendientes y los costos del funeral y entierro.

Sabemos que son tiempos difíciles y agradecemos cualquier contribución que nos ayude a reunirnos con nuestra abuela en lo que ahora es su lugar de descanso, en representación de su afligida hija y nuestra madre, Susana. Siempre tendremos los increíbles recuerdos con nuestra Abuelita Juanita, y las muchas risas que elevarán el largo legado de amor y cuidado que ella ha depositado sobre nuestros hombros.
