Savannah's captivating tree canopy is enjoyed by residents as well as over 14 million visitors annually. Our trees help contribute to a more sustainable Savannah, combating rising sea levels, stormwater, and temperatures. What is Savannah without its trees? For the past 41 years, Savannah Tree Foundation (STF) has protected and planted our urban forest so that we never have to find out the answer to that question.

Did you know that our iconic live oak tree canopy is the result of intentional tree planting efforts in the late 1890s? We enjoy these trees because a small group had the vision of a lush Savannah landscape and acted to make it happen.

Today, our urban forest is facing challenges like construction and climate change that have diminished our regional tree canopy. It is time for us to be the visionaries who plant our future canopy. Building on trailblazing work in urban forest preservation, Savannah Tree Foundation is once more innovating new ways to ensure Savannah continues to be the Forest City.

To secure this legacy, Savannah Tree Foundation is now spearheading Savannah's first Community Tree Nursery. A nursery that will preserve Savannah’s historic trees, increase tree planting and distribution volume, and maintain a diverse and top-tier inventory of native trees genetically adapted to our local climate.

Please consider donating today, every little bit will help!

Savannah Community Tree Nursery Benefits:
  • Allows for increased tree planting and distribution efforts in Coastal Georgia
  • Extends tree support into communities that have been historically underserved
  • Eliminates the carbon footprint and costs of having to source seedlings and young trees from out-of-state
  • Serves as an educational venue for community members of all ages and backgrounds and school-aged children
  • Allows STF to expand its volunteer and community outreach efforts
  • Increases job opportunities through STF’s “apprenticeship program”

Financial Goal:
We need your help to raise the initial $40,000 capital investment in the nursery! Funds will cover site build out, irrigation installation, the first year of planting materials and supplies, and on-site storage.

With this initial investment, we project that the nursery will be self-sustaining within two years.

Timeline:
January 2024 - Begin site build-out and irrigation installation
March 2024 - First plant material is established
Summer 2024 - Trees are on-site, with volunteer opportunities to weed, water, and maintain
November 2024 - First 3-gallon trees are ready for our annual community tree giveaway!
