Support Sawyer & his family

We are raising funds for my sweet 2-1/2 year old grandson, Sawyer. He will be having his 3rd neurosurgery on September 12 at the University of Iowa Hospital & Clinics. Sawyer was born with craniosynostosis (no soft spot) & his first surgery was when he was 3 months old. When he was about 8 months old, an MRI revealed that his coronal sutures were fused together on his skull, these are typically open until your early 20's allowing your brain room to grow. Since his were fused together, he had a second neurosurgery when he was 9 months old, which was much more complex than the first surgery & he was opened up ear to ear.

A follow up MRI about a year ago showed that all of the openings that were made on his skull have once again fused. Sawyer's surgeon has told Jordyn & Brandon (his parents) multiple times that Sawyer has a complex case that stumps him. They do not know why his skull is fusing when it should not be. To monitor, Sawyer has had to have eye exams to check his eye pressure. A recent exam revealed that Sawyer has inflammation in his optical nerves, indicating pressure from his brain. His surgeon ordered an MRI, which confirmed this.

So, once again, Sawyer will be heading to the University of Iowa for Neurosurgery. They honestly are not exactly sure yet what all the surgery will entail. A 3D CT scan will be done prior to surgery so that they have a better idea of what all will be done during surgery. They did indicate that it will be similar to his second surgery, however, will likely include some kind of expanders inserted into the sutures. It is expected that he will be in the hospital for 4-5 days, depending upon swelling and if a blood transfusion is needed.

Of course, our number one request is that you pray for Sawyer, Jordyn & Brandon. We have very strong faith & absolutely believe in the power of prayer. We know that God will have his healing hands on Sawyer, and his comforting hands on all of his family who loves him so very much.

If you are able, we are asking for financial support for Jordyn & Brandon. Jordyn just returned to work from maternity leave this last week and will have to take unpaid time off. Also to help them with medical bills & other expenses that will be incurred over the next several months as they once again navigate through this. There will be many follow up visits & MRI's in Iowa City.
