Support Scott Munro Through Brain Injury Rehab

Donation protected
My name is Katherine Munro, and I’m raising money to support my family through an unexpected, life altering medical crisis. Thank you for taking the time to read our story.

My dad, Scott Munro, is a loving father and husband and has always done so much to support my mom and I. He’s also known as a director of elementary education at Evergreen Public Schools in Vancouver, WA, where many people refer to him as a kind, determined, and strong person. After supporting his community as a leader for many years, my family now needs your help so we can support him.

On September 18th, 2023, my dad went in for an elective orthopedic outpatient surgery, and he did not wake up for days. For reasons still unknown, during the surgery he suffered a loss of oxygen to his brain, and he was in the ICU for a month. He now has significant brain damage; the doctors called it a hypoxic-anoxic brain injury. He’s dealing with rare symptoms due to this traumatic brain injury. We’re looking at months, possibly much longer, for recovery. He will need intense neurological care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and more.

We’ve learned that none of the inpatient rehab facilities in our part of the country provide the level of care my dad needs. His doctors here have recommended he go to Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago, IL. It’s ranked as the #1 rehabilitation hospital in the country. While the decision to go across the country was difficult, we know that my dad deserves and requires this level of care to provide the best outcome possible.

Your donations will be put towards:
  • Medical expenses and co-pays from his local hospital stay, and for his treatment at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago.
  • Travel expenses so my mom and I can be there with my dad as much as possible throughout his treatment.
  • Remodeling our home — We will need to make ADA accommodation changes to our home. We want our house to be ready and accessible for my dad whenever he completes rehab and can come back home.
  • Transportation costs for moving my dad back home — he may not be ready to fly on a commercial flight and will require a medical plane from Shirley Ryan.
  • Transportation costs for outpatient rehab once he’s home.

As we make the hard decision to ask for financial help, we’re preparing for the possibility that my dad, and my mom, who has been thrust into the role of his primary caretaker, may never be able to return to work again.

Throughout my life the best advice my dad has given me is to persevere through challenges, big or small. This is the biggest challenge my family has ever had to face, and my dad’s resilience and determination, as well as your donations, will help us make it through this. Thank you so much for praying for my dad and sending positive, healing thoughts our way.

With love,
Scott, Katrina, and Katherine Munro
