Support Scott–Head Baker at Cama Beach Cafe–in Cancer Fight

Donation protected
Dear Community,

I am reaching out to you on behalf of Scott Kastner, the beloved head baker at Cama Beach Cafe, who was diagnosed with cancer in mid-November 2023 and has been courageously fighting this battle ever since. Scott underwent 33 radiation treatments. In May, he was declared cancer-free, but in August, the cancer returned. On October 25, Scott underwent a major life-changing surgery. They completely removed his larynx (vocal cords) where his cancer was, as well as half his thyroid. They reconstructed his throat using tissue from his leg. This was a 5.5-hour procedure and required two surgeons to perform. After the surgery, there were 3 days of intensive care, 4 days of hospital care, to be followed by one or two more weeks of healing at home with a feeding tube.

Due to his health challenges, Scott has been unable to work and will not be able to work for a while after this surgery, resulting in major financial difficulties for his family. They are struggling to pay their mortgage, utilities, and even basic expenses such as food and groceries. Your support, no matter how small, would make a world of difference during this difficult time. In addition, there will be ongoing copays and medical supplies not covered by insurance.

Scott is not only a passionate baker for the Cama Beach Cafe but also an incredible person with a deep love for the cafe, animals – especially kitties, and his spouse. His kitty ColliePop (in the picture), his cherished companion who brought him joy, died on Wed, Oct 30, unexpectedly due to health issues including kidney problems, heart arrhythmia, and other costly life-saving medical treatments that were incurred to try and save her. Scott never got to say goodbye.

Scott used to manage a dialysis unit for 20 years and worked in healthcare for 30+ years and has spent countless hours helping diabetic patients through their struggles. His loving, kind spirit extended far beyond just the treatments they received. He became their friend and saw them through the good and bad times. When the patients didn’t make it through, he even went to their funeral or celebration of life to offer support for the family and friends that were left behind. It’s just another example of how huge his heart is.

We are immensely grateful for any support you can offer, whether it's a donation or simply spreading the word. Your kindness and generosity will help Scott and his family navigate through these challenging times. Thank you for being a part of our community and for showing compassion and support to someone who means so much to all of us.

With heartfelt gratitude...
