OUR STORY
Scrap Metal follows the story of Diane Robbins, one of the only female Vietnam War veterans, returning to her old life as a secretary. To cheer her up, her best friend from the military, Frank, offers her a job at his plane repair shop. Though unspoken, Frank and Diane begin to forge a romantic connection.
At work, Diane notices Frank cutting corners to save money, but he dismisses her concerns. When the two dance romantically at a dive bar, Diane gets hit on by an abusive stranger, but Frank saves her.
Just as her life begins to feel fulfilling, Diane learns that the plane she and Frank has repaired crashed, killing all its passengers. Diane confronts Frank, who, in a moment of desperation, pins the blame back on Diane. In their final moments together, Diane must decide to devote her life to her lover, or stand up for herself once and for all and turn him in to the cops.
OUR "WHY"?
"As a female filmmaker preparing to enter a male-dominated industry, seeing my experiences reflected on the big screen is a step towards equality. Scrap Metal represents a culmination of my past 4 years at film school, and a message to my freshman year self, who felt invisible amongst her male peers— after experiencing exclusion on film sets, misogynistic expectations in classes, and disrespect in my romantic relationships, I’ve finally come out the other end in finding my ground to stand on. As graduation nears, I’m extremely grateful to have gotten the opportunity to share my stories though the visual medium of film, and in working together with my female-dominated crew, I hope to create a product that will resonate with other women facing similar barriers, and set the standard for my future endeavors." -Elisa Fong-Hirschfelder.
