Dear family, friends, and fellow adventurers,
My younger brother, Seila, loves the outdoors and lives an active life. I've been immensely proud to watch all his adventures—from snowboarding to running to climbing.
I'm asking for your support for Seila, who recently experienced a life-altering accident while doing something he loved—rock climbing. On August 25, 2024, Seila was climbing near Big Bear. He was climbing a lead rope and was unfortunately dropped*. He fell ~30 ft and tumbled another ~30 ft. Seila suffered spinal fractures, skull fractures, and collapsed lungs. It is a miracle he survived. The accident resulted in traumatic brain injury and a complete spinal cord injury. The impact is paralysis—Seila has no motor or sensory function below his chest.
*This is a statement of what happened. This does not imply cause. It is not to blame or shame. Seila wants to help prevent future accidents in the rock climbing community. This accident will be submitted to Accidents in North American Climbing to aid in that.
This accident has drastically changed Seila’s life, but if you know him, you know he's a fighter. In typical Seila fashion, he has remained incredibly positive. His determination to recover and regain independence is inspiring. He still has a long road ahead that is incredibly challenging—physically, emotionally, and financially.
According to the National SCI Statistical Center, the estimated first year cost for paraplegia is $518,904 with each subsequent year $68,739 (in 2014 dollars). This GoFundMe will go towards helping Seila with the costs incurred from the accident and help him rebuild his life.
What the Funds Will Be Used For:
- Medical Expenses: Despite insurance, there are many uncovered costs, ongoing treatments, and medications.
- Rehabilitation: Intensive physical therapy is crucial for helping Seila regain as much independence as possible.
- Mobility Equipment: A specialized wheelchair and other assistive devices are essential for Seila to regain independence.
- Home Modifications: To adapt the home for accessibility, necessary renovations like ramps, widened doorways, and accessible bathrooms are needed.
- Daily Living Expenses: Seila will be out of work for awhile as he focuses on healing and rehab.
