Support self sustainable South African communities

We are raising funds on behalf of the Wobuntu Langa Community Organization in Langa, South Africa. Langa is a township in South Africa that has a population of over 100,000 people. Many of the residents live in severe poverty. The township has a 40% unemployment rate, and much of the housing is informal and lacks power or sanitation. What Langa has in abundance is a rich history of culture and self-sustainability. Prior to colonization by Europe, indigenous people of South Africa mastered sustainability.
Working with other members here in the US and abroad, we have partnered with a strong group of community leaders in Langa that are committed to the building and upliftment of their community. Our approach aims to empower the community by creating businesses and jobs, educating the community and youth, and implementing renewable energy and sanitation projects.
This campaign is to support the Wobuntu Langa Community group to build, modernize, renovate and create DIY(Do-It-Yourself) businesses and programs to sustain both themselves and the broader Langa community.
We will accomplish this through 3 areas of impact:
The Wobuntu Langa Market Square - Powered by Solar Energy, Water Collection Management and a Secured Structure
After School Program - Computer Coding, Soccer Club and Performing Arts taught by members of our community at Siyabulela Primary School.
Flourishing Township Businesses - Local Do-It-Yourself (DIY) businesses created by the skilled & talented people that are eager to build their communities together. This will empower the local community and create new jobs.
For the The Wobuntu Langa Market Square, we will invest $10,000 USD in 5 Community lead businesses to generate an estimated revenue of $60,000 USD. The 5 businesses include:
Historical Tourism - History and culture tours. Local Langa residents share the rich cultural history of South Africa's oldest township.
E-Rickshaw - Entrepreneurship program to empower older youth, to assemble and drive their own E-rickshaws to serve the community with safe transportation options.
Community Cafe - Community centered bakery and cafe. Using produce from the co-working urban garden.
Indigenous Fashion - Creating a premier fashion destination that blends the rich cultural heritage of South Africa with cutting-edge sustainable apparel.
Organic Community Garden - Building a vibrant organic community garden that will also serve as an education center for organic gardeners, cooks and educators. Training residents in the agriculture, food and hospitality professions.
We will also invest $15,000 into converting the Wobuntu Community Space into the Wobuntu Langa Peopleize Market that includes:
- Solar Power Station: 1 kW Solar Panels + 2 kWh Battery
- LED Lighting
- Rain Barrels - Water Source
- Sewerage
- Secured Facility
We recognize that the foundation of what we do will be the community programs. With that in mind, we have already launched an afterschool program with Siyabulela Primary School. We are teaching Coding, Sports and Culture. We seek to expand the program as well as support the volunteers. We are also creating the Community Garden education program. We will use $2160 for these programs.
We are confident that with support the bright, hardworking community leaders in Langa can begin to unlock the genius in their community and devise the solutions to the problems in their community.
