Support Shannon’s Fight to Keep Her Autistic Son

Hello everyone. My name is Mitzi George, and I am seeking any help available for one of my best friends of 37 years. I met Shannon in the summer of 1987 at Freshman Orientation at the University of North Texas. Since then, we have become very close personal friends. Shannon has been married for over 33 years and has three wonderful children, including one who suffers from autism. In 1990, she suffered a catastrophic injury in which she broke her neck causing paralysis and loss of sensation and was told she would never walk again. Even though she faced these terrible odds, she recovered and persevered. In 1992, she joined the newly-created family business of selling gourmet foods. The business was hugely successful! Once the pandemic hit, the business took a serious downturn in which she has been unable to recover. Additionally, her physical health has been in decline, so she was unable to continue with face-to-face selling of her products and is currently working a 40+-hour/week job to support her family. On April 24 of this year, her husband of 33+ years surprised her by telling her he wanted a divorce. Since then, he has abandoned her and her three children and left Shannon to care for her autistic adult son on her own. Michael left her with no money in the bank whatsoever. Shannon is concerned about keeping the custody of her adult autistic child and must procure a lawyer to ensure that he continues to live with her. She has never been the type of person to ask for any handouts or help from others. She has always been an independent, hardworking, and self-sufficient mother and parent.
